Hi. If we haven't met, my name is Mark. Here's a little statement.

I'm often asked exactly why my paintings are predominantly black and white or monochrome.

The short answer is that I'm ruthlessly colorblind. It took me (and somehow, everyone around me) years to realize this.

The long answer is that by largely eliminating color, it not only made the painting process less frustrating for me, but also helped to better connect with viewers. Even when I do use color, the picture is first completed in black and white, then hand-tinted in a similar process to that which was used on old photographs. I still have to keep it fairly simple, or work off of learned combinations, since I don't perceive color relationships properly.

I discovered that these processes seemed to delicately evoke the qualities of, say, the newspaper clippings or vernacular photography that form the basis for many of my images (these formats are also the foundation for a good number of our memories).

In some way or another, my work has always been about the past; I generally consider a picture to be successful if it reminds the viewer of something. Or even provokes nostalgia for an event or time they were never around to witness.

Eventually, I refined these ideas into my current paintings; a style that skews between half-colored realism and some form of gray expressionism, between tightly rendered figures and soft, loose impressions of scenes.

Hopefully, they'll remind you of something.

I want to thank everyone who has supported me and my work over the years. Your kind words are what keeps me going and I can't express how meaningful your patronage has been. Thanks!

Thanks for looking and have a great day!
