Mama Tried came out of Bakersfield and then spent decades in Grateful Dead setlists, sung with a grin and a bit more gallop than the original ever had. It sits right at the point where outlaw country and the long strange trip shake hands, and plenty of people arrived at one of those through the other. Made for a truck, a helmet, a toolbox lid, a guitar case, or the tailgate of something that has seen a few dirt roads. For anyone whose mother genuinely did try.
Jerry Garcia lost the top two thirds of the middle finger on his right hand at four years old, in a wood splitting accident, and then played guitar for thirty years without it. That hand turns up in the artwork almost as often as his face does. So does Tiger, the guitar Doug Irwin delivered to him in 1979: thirteen and a half pounds of it, played nearly every night for a decade. His last show was July 9, 1995. He died a month later.
