Common chickweed

Latin name: Stellaria media

Common chickweed is an annual herbaceous species of the Caryophyllaceae family.
It prefers nitrogen-rich soils.
It germinates in autumn or winter and then survives the frosty season completely unscathed.
It is originated to Europe, but it was also introduced in North America.
The plant contains vitamins A and C, and it is also rich in magnesium, phosphorus and quartz.
Its juicy, sweet leaves are ideal for processing in salads or soups.
When cooked, the herb can be prepared like spinach. It is used as a tea for external and internal use.
Chickweed is particularly common for hemorrhoids, rashes or coughs. Saponins give the plant an excellent diuretic effect.
High saponin content of the plant can be responsible for diarrhea and vomiting in some animals.
