Scarce, Nice old mid-19th century seaman's chest made from solid camphor wood, which would have been imported from Asia. It has two raised skids running the length of it on the underside for easier moving. Lid lifts to reveal a full-depth divided bin on one side, a smaller raised box on the opposite side. Three hinges on the lid, all which look to be in the original location, made in the same size. The lid has an ever so slight lift/warp at the left front corner, but minor, and the chest closes just fine. The lip on the left side is attached with small hand-cut nails and is a little loose.
There is an early, hand-cut brass escutcheon plate around the lock. There is some exterior repair and infill piecing around the lock mechanism. Dovetailed on all four corners, with brass corner straps added as a strengthening overlay. There are ghosts of curved corner brackets on the bottom of the piece, most likely in brass as the corner straps are. The original rope Beckets are long gone, but the cleats have some especially nice carved detail. Few of these survived.
Perfect coffee table size, or to place at the foot of a bed.
Measurements: 40.5" wide, 17.5" deep and 19" high.
