This is a signed letter by Thomas Sylvy Gordon
(1893-1959), who was a U.S. Representative
from Illinois for sixteen years.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Gordon graduated from
St. Stanislaus College in 1912. He was in the
banking business from 1916 to 1920. He worked
for a Polish-language daily newspaper for more
than twenty years.
He served as Commissioner of Chicago West Parks
from 1933 to 1936, and as Commissioner of public
vehicle licenses from 1936 to 1939 (so he can indeed
be referred to as "Commissioner Gordon ").
Gordon was City Treasurer of Chicago from 1939 to 1942.
He was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-eighth
United States Congress, and also to the seven succeeding
Congresses, serving from January 3, 1943, to January 3, 1959.
Gordon did not run for a ninth term due to illness.
He died less than three weeks after his last day in office.
The letter is dated March 29, 1950.
This letter is typed on official Congressional stationery.
This signed letter is addressed to Capt. Richard H. Lake,
of the "Visitors' Bureau, Berlin Military Post, APO 742."
