This postcard shows the royal Berg Castle, located on the eastern shore of Lake Starnberg in Berg, Germany, of Upper Bavaria.
A royal castle existed at this location as early as 1676, but the pictured Berg Castle was built in the early 1850s at the direction of King Maximilian II. It was a summer residence and location of the controversial death of King Ludwig II of Bavaria in June of 1886-- incidentally, one can see on the postcard the small "fifth tower," named Isolde, that Ludwig II had added on to the original castle-design.
After Word War II, the royal castle was reconstructed and basically returned to its 17th century appearance, upon which it became referred to as a "manor house." Today it is a residence of Franz, Duke of Bavaria, head of the house of Wittelsbach.
