Having carefully perused the column of “houses to let,” and the column of “dogs lost,” and then the two columns of “wives and apprentices runaway,” I attacked with great resolution the editorial matter, and, reading it from beginning to end without understanding a syllable, conceived the possibility of its being Chinese, and so re-read it from the end to the beginning, but with no more satisfactory result.

Here we offer the 1844 collection of "The Columbian Magazine" bound in one large volume at year's end, as was the custom at the time. It includes all 1844 issues, and is most notable for its contributions by Edgar Allan Poe and a young Walt(er) Whitman. Included is Whitman's short stories, "Dumb Kate, an Early Death," "Eris, a Spirit Record," and "The Little Sleighers;" and Poe's short stories, "The Angel of the Odd--an Extravaganza," and "Mesmeric Revelation," and his review, "Byron and Miss Chaworth." Additionally, the book is filled with other literature, articles, poetry, music, and, notably, highly-detailed, eye-popping engravings, including a hand-colored fashion plate for each month--a wonderful document of antebellum Americana.

Well-worn boards (please see pics). Period binder's label on inner front board. Book has been reblocked and rebound with new acid-free saddles and 2 placeholding ribbons. The plate from February entitled "The Sisters," has been cut out and the fashion plate for September is missing.  Otherwise all is complete. There are a few 19th century page repairs and a spot of mildew staining on the upper edge of the last 6 leaves.  Typical foxing throughout. Very tight and square binding.  Very clean, bright, and crisp text. 571 pages in all; measures approximately 10.25 x 6.5-inches.
