Rare French Antique Perpetual Calendar- Advertising 1900’s
A rare advertising collectible – a cast iron perpetual calendar created by the Quint & Flamant company in the 1900’s as promotional give-away.
The calendar was designed with three wheels – one with dates for the seven days of the week on top of a wheel with the actual days of the week and one with the months of the year.
Two of the wheels turn to indicate the date and the month, while the days wheel is fixed. Both wheels turn easily and overall, it is in excellent condition.
The bottom of the calendar is marked Quint & Flamant, St Quentin and fonte (cast iron), aluminium – bronze (brass).
It measures 4 ¾ inches wide (12 cms) and 6 ½ inches (16.5 cms) to the curved top which has an opening for it to be hung on a wall. There is also an opening on the back for a metal rod to be inserted so it could be displayed on a desk. Heavy for its size, it could be made of cast iron.
Quint & Flamant was a large foundry located in the industrial village of St Quentin located on the Somme river in northeast France, producing cast iron, aluminium and bronze. Caught in the horrific WWI battle of the Somme in 1916, the foundry was destroyed as were most of the industrial plants of the area.
Antique perpetual calendars have become sought-after collectables and this one is a very rare example of advertising memorabilia.
