It is a deciduous, dioecious shrub that grows up to 2-6 m (6.5-20 ft) high. Sea-buckthorn belongs to the family of olive-willow-plants. The plant prefers sandy and pebble soils in sunny locations. From early August to early December it produces the longish, oval, orange-red fruits. The acidic, tasty fruits can be eaten processed to jam or can be processed into alcoholic beverages. Sea-buckthorn is known for its high vitamin and mineral content. Sea-buckthorn contains vitamin A, B1, B6, C, E and K, as well as it is rich in potassium, calcium, sodium, magnesium and iron. The fatty oil in the leaves promotes healing. The tea made from its leaves is taken for blood pressure controlling.
