This is a signed letter written by Charles S. Whitman (1868-1947).
Whitman was the 41st Governor of New York,
serving two terms from 1915 through 1918.
Whitman also held many other public offices,
including city magistrate, judge of the Court of
Sessions, deputy attorney general, and District Attorney.
Whitman signed the death warrant for Lt. Charles Becker,
the first American police officer to receive the death
penalty for murder. Becker was electrocuted in 1915.
The letter is addressed to Herbert Foster Gunnison (1858 - 1932),
the longtime editor of the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper.
The letter is in regards to Gunnison turning down a position
on the Board of the Long Island Agricultural School.
The letter is dated April 18, 1916.
It is written on a folded sheet of stationery.
Unfolded, it is about 10" by 14".
The heading on the stationery reads as follows:

embossed in gold at the top of the page.
The letter is in very good condition, with moderate wear.
The letter comes with a
