Print info:
Whether in flight or at rest,
the American eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a majestic sight. Also called the bald eagle, this great bird
possesses broad, powerful wings which spread 6 to 8 feet as it soars the
thermal currents of the sky. The eagle
does not develop its distinctive white head and tail until it reaches maturity
at about five years of age. Eagles mate
for life, establishing a family household in a nest usually high atop a tall
tree. Since the nest will serve the
birds for 20 years or more, the eagle continuously builds upon it until it may
row as large as 15 feet deep and 8 feet wide.
A fish eater, the eagle may
pick its prey at the water’s surface or wrest a freshly caught fish away from
the grip of an osprey. The meal is
returned to the nest and shared with the eagles’ young. The American eagle was once commonly seen
across the North American continent.
While the eagle today is abundant in Alaska, the U.S. government
continues to list it as an endangered species.
Still, no other bird greater symbolizes the free spirit or “Wings over
America”.
