Each spring, a new generation of mule deer is welcomed to the world, each born to a mother who is one of nature’s most conscientious parents. Mule deer are at home in many habitats, ranging from southeastern Alaska to northern Mexico. They favor the mountainous wilderness of the western U.S., though the deer have been known to range from southeast Alaska to Mexico, east to Hudson Bay, Minnesota and western Texas.

When the birthing season arrives in late spring, a does is often graced with twins, each fawn generously spotted with white specks that help it safely blend in with spring wildflowers and grasses that grow thick in the summer. Newborn fawns are able to stand and take their first gingerly steps within hours of their birth. However, they spend most of their first months concealed in dense vegetation, under their mother’s watchful eye.

The fawn’s brightly spotted coat will turn to a smooth shade of grayish brown by year’s end. When the next spring arrives, the young mule deer will be at the brink of maturity – and may choose to set out on a path of its own. But for now, Charles Frace’s young fawn seems to have nothing more important to do than absorb the wonders of its new world and the excitement of its “Fresh Start.”
