FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About The Regrout Tool

When should I regrout?

With tile and grout is it a matter of when, not if! We recommend regrouting prior to any water damage to the substrate or below the tile surfaces, such as a kitchen counter top or shower floors and walls.

Considering how harsh chemical cleaners are and have been to tile grouts of late, we would recommend regrouting once the grout is below the bevel of the tiles edge. Water should not be pooling in the floor grout joint, and more times than not you can notice the horizontal grout lines on a shower wall to be thinner than the vertical lines, If that is the case then it is time to regrout. If you are buying over the counter tile and grout cleaners at your local grocery store your more than likely guilty of etching your grout away!

Wherever caulking is present, remove the caulk and regrout, its tile and grout, not tile and caulk! Even though you personally use safe cleaners, chances are your tiles prior owners didn't. You always want to clean with a Ph balanced non-caustic cleaner!

If you notice a odor that won't go away around your kitchen sink or inside the bathroom check your grout levels if low, don't just put grout over the old grout without using the Regrout Tool first to assure a solid bond with the old grouts new surface. Remove all caulking and check for moldy or missing grout.

Usually around the bathtub where the tile meets the porcelain tub you will have caulking there and that is where the most damage is seen, stall shower floor perimeter joints are also a good area to check for cracks and or separation from the floor to the wall, corners are good areas too! Also check on top of the soap dish in the shower or tub. Jumping up and down while inside a porcelain tub or stall shower creates cracks the grout.

The vibration caused by walking, or jumping on the 2nd level floor, kids jumping from bed to floor, ie. bunk beds crack grout in showers.

Also you may notice grout damage or bubbled paint or drywall on the outside edges of the tub glass enclosures, and or shower doors. By slamming the shower glass doors shut when entering and exiting the shower creating the vibration that transfers to the grout at the top of the dam therefore breaking the bond and cracking the grout leading to water leaking into the walls on the inside and outside the shower, usually at the level of the dam or the bit of tile you step over to get into the shower.

What makes the Regrout Tool's carbide tips, speed adjustment and motor unique?

Carbide is much stronger than usual steel, or other iron ore materials used for machine bits ie. steel chisels, jackhammer shanks etc..A carbide tip can work through thousands of hours and thousands of custom regrouting jobs, you won't dull the pointed tip, not on sanded 1/8" grout joints, especially true on 1/16" non-sanded grouts.

Speed adjustment is critical when conditions warrant fine detail work..deco's, liners, V-caps, qtr-rounds etc..you don't need all the power when it comes to precision detail work.

When you are on the surface of the counter or shower then you can put the carbide to the tile, and let it rip on the 3rd position and remove 1/16" grout at 1" / sec top speed!

The motor is unique because we combined this motor with several cooling devices both inside and outside that enable the motor to run for extended lengths of time without fear of it overheating and shutting down. Its patented as a continuous use motor not intermittent! It was made to run continuously for hours at a time.

The pointed tip will remove grout widths of 1/64" to 1/8" no other grout removal tool can make that claim! The chisel tip can remove the wider non-sanded grouts usually around a bathtub, kitchen sink, corners and on shower floors where the grout is typically 1/8".

Will the vibrating action be hard on my hands or joints

Not if used properly, the Regrout Tool has been designed to be both lightweight and powerful so just apply slight pressure to guide the tool. When working on a kitchen counter top you only need the weight of the tool for pressure to remove the grout..of course on a shower wall you will actually hold the tool and then you might feel a slight discomfort.

After all it is a pneumatic tool and being such there is always going to be an unavoidable residual effect. slight at best.

How safe is it?

So safe, you can touch your finger to the vibrating tip without harm.

What is the difference between sanded or non-sanded grout?

There are two typical types of grouts, sanded and non-sanded. Typically all kitchen counters and showers built prior to 1985 are non-sanded, it is narrow usually 1/16" white and smooth to the touch. It can be used for grout widths up to but not to exceed 1/8".

The sanded grout is rough and gritty to the touch and wider 1/8" to 1/2" it has silica sand in it which enables it to fill those wider grout joints..used widespread during the 80's and 90's on kitchen counter tops and showers!

Will the Regrout Tool remove both kinds of grout?

Yes, The Regrout Tool removes both sanded and non-sanded grout. The pointed tip is used for non-sanded grout, 1/16" to 1/8" the chisel tip is used as deemed necessary, but typically for the 1/8" grout.

Attn: The Regrout Tool will not remove two part epoxy resin grouts!!

I have old, delicate, expensive tile misaligned grout lines. Will the Regrout Tool work for removing grout in a case like this?

Yes, Many pre-1970 tile installations were hand set without spacers on the edges of the tiles thus leaving the tile setters with very few options for grout widths, most of the old tilesetters smoked and used paper matches to space the tiles, but they usually had an eye! Some of the older tile jobs I have been on had the liners laying on top of the tile with little to no grout joint. Some were cut by nippers and the edges were ground down with a stone. Way before the electric tile saw, still not a problem for the Regrout Tool. Most liners are 6" long by 1/4" wide and the placement is so irregular and tight that any hint of grinding the old grout down will burr the edge of the old tiles and or the liners, therefore ruining the tiles. Not a problem for the Regrout Tool!

How does the Regrout Tool's price tag compare to similar items out on the market?

It can't compare, since there are no similar items on the market! I can tell you though that the Regrout Tool was conceived, designed, developed and patented by a craftsman that knew exactly what kind of tool he needed to remove grout in all situations regarding 1/8" or less grout removal. There are so many different tools that claim to be grout removal tools along with base board cutters to cutting pvc pipe etc...and then their are tools out there that create enormous amounts of toxic dust that is bad for any life forms. How much grout should I remove before regrouting?

You only need to remove the grout from the beveled edges of the tile, on 1/16" grout widths your pointed tips will rest on the edges of the tiles and by holding the tool at a 30 degree angle you will remove enough grout to enable you to see new surface of the old grout..Once this is done then your able to regrout with new grout which will bond to the new exposed surface of the old grout. With the chisel tip on 1/8" you could go deeper but it is unnecessary since your only need to go below the tiles beveled edge. You could use the chisel tip for cutting all the grout out around a tile down through the thinset to remove a broken tile.

After removing the old grout, what type of grout should I use to replace it?

It is always best to use a professional grout powder mixed with a latex additive and Microban. I would advise staying away from any premixed or ready-to-use products.

They are problematic unproven and inferior. I recommend visiting a professional tile store and purchasing your grouting supplies from an experienced salesperson.
