Striking and scarce autographed engraved portrait of President Calvin "Silent Cal" Coolidge. Beautifully executed by Franklin P. Mead, it was published and printed by Charles Barmore - his copyright line is at bottom center of the image. The artist signature is accompanied by the inscription: "Seventeenth proof from copper plate". Coolidge's distinctive signature is in pencil at lower left. The only other piece I can find is listed for sale at $4950.
In excellent vintage condition. Overall toning, and there is some mild ripple to the print. Some dirt under the glass - but other than a few small spots, there do not appear to be any signficant issues to mention. We have not examined this out of the frame, but the print does not appear to have been glued down to a board.
Frame is approximately 22" x 25", and the visible portion of the print is 12.5" x 16.25".
After
succeeding to the Presidency in 1923 upon Harding's death, Coolidge was elected
to a full four-year term in 1924. In 1927, while vacationing in the Black
Hills of South Dakota, President Coolidge announced, "I do not choose to run for
President in 1928." He and First Lady Grace Coolidge retired to their
Northampton, Massachusetts home, where he died in 1933 at 60 and she died in
1957 at 78.
