These plans are for the "RYE BAY 10" and the "RYE BAY 12". I designed them both to be a general purpose dinghy capable of being rowed, motored or sailed but these plans currently only detail a sail rig for th 10ft version. However, we have been told that a Mirror dinghy rig has been adapted to this design which worked very well but we have not yet tested that. They were originally intended as a motor runabout for fishing lakes, rivers, harbours and canals etc but would lend themselves to sailing as well. A buoyancy tank can be built in fore and aft and more could be added under the centre seat. The pictures show one of the first built by a home builder from the plans.
The "RYE BAY 10" is 10' - 0" long with a 5' beam and an approx dry weight of 100lbs (45kg) for a maximum crew of 3. Built from plywood with 9mm bottom panel and 6mm sides, she presents only a little extra work than her smaller sister.

The Rye Bay 12 is 12' - 0" long with a 5' - 4" beam and an approx dry weight of 130lbs (59kg) approx for a maximum crew of 4. Built from plywood with 9mm bottom panel and 6mm sides as with the 10'version.

The plans have recently been updated and adapted to the relatively easy modern building method of “stitch & tape”. (Brief details of this method are on our website). The building instructions are easy to read and illustrated taking you through the build process in easy step by step stages. A list of tools you will need and a basic materials list are included. Plus, to help you further, plans for a practice project, a glossary of boat building terms, a suppliers list and email support when you start if you have any problems understanding the plans or problems with the build.
Building a boat is a very enjoyable project giving you something to go pottering about with on your local water, fishing, rowing to keep fit, motoring off to a secluded picnic site or sailing. All you need is a little time, patience and attention to detail.
These plans make for the ideal project as a first boat building attempt, as a second building project or as a gift for the person who has always said they want to build a boat.
If you have some DIY experience or are good with your hands, you too could build your own dinghy. They are not too difficult and the materials required are easily found locally or by mail order often with next day delivery.
