The National Dove Bottle (also historically tied to the Thayer Dove Bottle or Rat Bottle) is a classic piece of vintage stage magic apparatus originally manufactured and sold by the National Magic Company (N.M.C.). The Effect 1. The magician borrows a ring or an object from an audience member, which is then seemingly lost, ground up, or destroyed. 2. The magician presents a bottle and pours completely different, real drinks (wine, water, soda) for multiple spectators from the very same bottle. 3. Finally, the magician breaks open the bottle to reveal a live, unharmed dove (or occasionally a small rat or guinea pig) inside, which is holding the spectator's missing ring. The Secret & Mechanism The trick relies on a highly specialized, specially engineered vintage bottle apparatus: • The Compartments: The bottle features a false bottom or an isolated inner lining. The upper half or an isolated tube contains the liquids, allowing the magician to pour real drinks out of the spout without harming the animal. • The Living Load: The bottom or center portion of the bottle features a secret cavity that safely houses the live dove. It is constructed with air holes and padding to protect the bird. • The "Break": The bottle is typically made of a two-part breakaway material or a cleverly segmented metal/wood facade painted to look like glass, allowing the magician to safely "crack" or split it apart without risking harm to the animal inside.
