Details: This is an original Imperial Japanese Army Senninbari from the WW2 era, also known as a Thousand Stitch Belt. Senninbari were traditional good-luck cloths prepared for soldiers, with stitches made as prayers for safety, good fortune in battle, and a safe return. This example is made from two layers of fabric sewn together and features the Japanese characters “Buun Chokyu,” meaning “Everlasting Fortune in Battle,” formed with vermilion stitching. A period 5 Sen coin is sewn directly onto the cloth with red thread. The 5 Sen coin was used as a symbolic good-luck charm based on Japanese wordplay: “4 Sen” could be associated with “Shisen,” meaning the line of death, while 5 Sen symbolized passing beyond the “death line.” The long narrow form was designed in a style that could be worn around the abdomen or head. This is a rare and valuable surviving historical artifact associated with Imperial Japanese Army soldiers during WW2. Due to more than 80 years of age, there are wrinkles, stains, discoloration, fraying, loose threads, and other age-related deterioration. Please check the photos carefully for the overall condition.
