What does a man choose once he has stopped wanting to be noticed?
In Japan the answer, for a long stretch of years, was a Dolce. Seiko's dress line asked for nothing at all: a slim round case in polished stainless steel, a bracelet running almost flush with the lugs, and a dial that gave up the hour without ceremony. It went under a shirt cuff and stayed there.
This one, made in 2003, has more warmth than most. The dial is ivory rather than white, with a fine basket-weave texture worked into the centre, and the hours are marked in applied gold Roman numerals instead of batons - a small piece of formality that lifts it clear of the ordinary. A sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating keeps the surface reading as cream rather than as a mirror.
Behind it sits the 8J41, a High Accuracy Quartz calibre good to within ten seconds a year, which was what Seiko reached for whenever precision mattered more than complication.
Two decades of quiet service, and it looks ready for two more.
