Antique c1805 Geogian Thomas Rose Coalport Porcelain Plate Dish Vine Berries Gilt

An attractive early Coalport porcelain plate dating to around 1805, made at the Thomas Rose factory at Coalport.

The broad border is hand painted with repeating purple vine leaves and vivid iron-red berry or grape clusters, linked by finely painted gilt foliage and curling puce tendrils. The decoration is framed by puce line borders and a gilt rim, with further concentric gilt bands defining the otherwise clean white centre.

This distinctive red, purple and gilt vine pattern is recorded on Thomas Rose Coalport porcelain of around 1805, including surviving tea wares in the same decoration. Thomas Rose operated one of the two early Coalport factories, separately from his brother John Rose, before the businesses were ultimately consolidated.

The plate has the crisp, slightly spare neoclassical composition typical of early Coalport, while the strong purple and iron-red enamels give the border considerable decorative impact.
