Antique c1790 Georgian Snuff Box Engraved Copper Folk Art Bright Cut T Stanley

A highly characterful late Georgian copper snuff box, dating to around c1790, engraved to the lid with the ownership name “T Stanley”. This is a wonderfully tactile 18th-century personal object, combining deep original patina, bright-cut folk decoration and the strong handmade presence collectors look for in early snuff boxes.

The box is oval in form, solidly made and pleasingly weighty in the hand, with a close-fitting lift-off lid and a deep, darkened surface from age and handling. The copper has developed a rich brown patina, with darker tones to the outer surfaces and warmer copper colour visible to the interior walls. The inside has an aged, darker base surface consistent with long use as a working snuff box.

The lid is especially appealing. The central oval reserve is beautifully engraved with the name “T Stanley” in flowing late Georgian script, surrounded by bright-cut decorative work. The border is filled with a geometric diamond pattern, small punched details and stylised leaf or fan motifs, giving the box a strong folk art character. This is not factory ornament in the later Victorian sense, but personal hand-worked decoration with real period charm.

Bright-cut engraving of this type was very much in keeping with late 18th and early 19th-century taste. It catches the light across the darkened copper surface and gives the box a subtle decorative richness without losing its practical, personal quality. The contrast between the refined script name and the more naïve geometric border is one of the most attractive features of the piece.

The named ownership makes the box far more interesting than an anonymous example. “T Stanley” gives it a direct human connection, suggesting a personal snuff box made, owned or presented for an individual rather than a plain generic container. The construction has the honest feel of age, with a visible side join, small old pin or rivet points, surface marks and wear consistent with long handling. The deep patina has not been over-cleaned, preserving the historic surface and giving the box a very authentic look. It remains strong, tactile and highly displayable.
