History;
Four millimetres. That is the entire thickness of this watch, case back to crystal, and everything about it follows from that number.
By 1988 Seiko had been refining the Dolce for most of a decade, and the thinnest references were where the line made its argument. The case here is an upright rectangle with the corners cut into flats, built in two metals: a gold outer frame carrying the lugs, and a steel inner bezel ringing the dial, so the watch reads as a picture in its own frame. A black cabochon sits in the gold crown.
The dial is champagne gold, unmarked except for slim applied batons and a doubled one at twelve, with the Dolce script low on the face. Over it, a sapphire crystal - the reason the surface is still flawless after thirty-seven years - and beneath it the 7730, a two-hand quartz with no date window to break the line.
There is a particular pleasure in a watch that slides under a shirt cuff without being noticed. That was the whole design brief, and it still works.
