This is a genuine ammonite fossil preserved in its original matrix, from an old private fossil collection in Japan.

The specimen measures approximately 10 cm (3.94 inches) across, including the surrounding matrix. Its dark coloration, natural shell details, and substantial matrix give it a distinctive and attractive appearance for display.

A handwritten note remains on the reverse of the matrix. It records the collection date as August 6, 1978, and appears to refer to the Hobetsu area of Hokkaido, Japan. However, the precise collection locality and scientific classification have not been independently verified.

The previous owner personally collected and prepared fossils mainly from fossil-producing areas of Hokkaido, including Yubari, Haboro, Mukawa/Hobetsu, and Obira.

An additional fossil-like inclusion or fragment can also be seen on the side of the matrix. Its species has not been identified.

Condition:

This is an old, naturally preserved fossil specimen. The ammonite and surrounding matrix show cracks, chips, missing shell sections, surface wear, and other natural imperfections.

Some areas may have been cleaned, repaired, adhered, stabilized, coated, or otherwise prepared by the previous owner for display. The glossy surface may be the result of a previous preservation or finishing treatment.

A small collection number label marked “643” is attached to the front. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
