Antique Rare James Dixon c1887 Silver Plated Navy Sailor Figural Centrepiece Bowl Dolphin Feet

A striking and atmospheric late Victorian silver plated figural centrepiece, dating to around the Jubilee period of 1887, and very much reflecting the confidence and global presence of the Royal Navy at its height. This is a true centre feature piece, with strong sculptural presence, a well-balanced composition and an appealing, naturally aged patina, the sort of object that would have carried a significant cost when new and intended for prominent display.

The design is built around a well-modelled sailor figure standing in an Atlas-like pose, arms raised to support the bowl above. The figure is particularly well observed, dressed in a traditional naval uniform with the distinctive square-cut collar and neckerchief falling neatly across the shoulders and chest. Around the waist, a belt is clearly defined, with a small penknife or sailor’s clasp knife tucked at the side, an authentic detail that adds to the realism and maritime character. The bearded face, textured hair and confident stance give the figure a strong sense of individuality and presence.

The bowl is formed as a deep fluted shell with a scalloped rim, catching the light well and adding height and visual impact. The base is richly shaped and supported on four finely cast dolphin feet, each with good movement and definition, their curved bodies forming the supports at the lowest point. The dolphin, long associated with safe passage at sea, is a fitting motif and ties the whole maritime theme together.

Although unmarked for a specific maker, the construction, casting style and overall design are very much in line with late 19th-century Sheffield production. In particular, it closely resembles the work of James Dixon & Sons, one of the leading Sheffield silversmiths of the Victorian period, known for producing high-quality decorative and figural silver plated wares. Pieces of this scale and complexity were not inexpensive items; they were produced for well-appointed homes and intended as statement pieces for the dining table or sideboard.

The silver plate has developed a soft, even patina, enhancing the detail and giving the piece a warm tone. There is light wear and rubbing to the high points, entirely consistent with age and use, but no structural issues. It stands firmly with all four feet intact and the bowl securely supported.

A strong decorative statement piece with clear maritime associations, well suited as a centrepiece or display object, and particularly appealing to collectors of naval, figural or late Victorian silver plate.
