A stylish vintage solid sterling silver hinged box, beautifully made in a Rococo Revival style with an ornate raised scrollwork border and elegant shaped outline. Compact, tactile and finely finished, it is a versatile small silver box suitable for pills, snuff, jewellery, keepsakes or use as a refined dressing-table trinket case.
The lid is framed by a particularly attractive raised scroll border, with flowing volutes and scalloped curves giving the piece a much more decorative presence than a plain silver pill box. The form draws on earlier Rococo and Georgian silver traditions, reinterpreted in a clean late 20th-century British style. The polished central lid panel provides a pleasing contrast against the more elaborate outer edge, allowing the relief border to catch the light beautifully.
The box is well constructed, with a neatly integrated hinged lid which opens smoothly and closes with a satisfying click, sitting flush and secure against the base. This click-shut action is a particularly pleasing practical detail, making it suitable for carrying small important items safely as well as for display. The proportions are practical and portable, small enough to sit comfortably in the hand or pocket, yet solid enough to feel like a quality silver object rather than a lightweight novelty piece.
The interior is especially attractive, with an engine-turned perlage-style finish formed from overlapping circular patterns. This creates a shimmering decorative surface when opened and adds a welcome touch of craftsmanship to the inside of the box. It also gives the piece a more luxurious feel, making it suitable as a special presentation box for small personal items.
The underside is fully marked for sterling silver with Birmingham assay marks, “925” standard mark and maker’s mark “CME”. The date letter places the piece in the later 20th century, circa 1970s, though the design intentionally echoes much earlier Rococo and Georgian silver forms.
The silver has developed a natural vintage patina with light surface marks from careful use, adding character without detracting from its elegant appearance. A beautifully decorative and practical solid silver box, ideal for carrying small important items or displaying as part of a silver collection.
