A rare and substantial Greek Orthodox reliquary cross or encolpion, dating to around c1910, finely constructed in high-grade silver with a contrasting applied 9k gold crucifix to the front.

This is a genuine opening reliquary rather than simply a decorative cross pendant. The body is made in two substantial sections, secured by an original threaded screw at the foot. Removing the screw allows the backplate to separate, revealing the concealed cross-shaped chamber within.

The front is particularly striking, with the figure of Christ finely engraved upon the applied yellow-gold crucifix and surrounded by traditional Orthodox decoration. Around the terminals are the Greek Christograms IC XC NIKA, meaning Jesus Christ Conquers, while the small tablet above Christ represents the Orthodox form of the inscription Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.

The contrast between the warm gold crucifix and the darker oxidised silver gives the piece considerable depth. The silver framework is further detailed with fine punched and engraved borders, while the substantial fluted suspension bail continues the strong handmade character of the piece.

The reverse is deliberately plain and bears a clearly struck 950 fineness mark together with a secondary workshop or registration punch. The 950 mark, dark natural oxidation and construction are consistent with high-grade continental silver rather than platinum.

Opening the cross reveals the original hollow reliquary chamber, which still contains old hardened brown and amber resinous material. This appears consistent with the remains of devotional incense, possibly frankincense or a similar blessed aromatic resin. The material has been left undisturbed and provides an interesting indication that the cross was genuinely used for its intended religious purpose rather than existing solely as jewellery.

Reliquary crosses of this type have a long tradition within Greek and Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Known as encolpia, they were worn close to the body and could contain small sacred relics, blessed earth, incense or other devotional material. The form ultimately derives from Byzantine reliquary crosses, with the tradition continuing for centuries throughout the Orthodox world.

The hand-fitted two-part construction, original slotted screw, substantial bail, applied crucifix and accumulated devotional wear all support an early 20th-century date.
