This nifty, uncommon, cover(envelope has some minor stains and noticeable creases, and small tears around its edges; back flap is intact, but has some creases and small tears in it connected to the initial opening of the mail) was sent on or around May 22, 1883, from Lima, Peru, to Mr. Edward C. Browne(sender's brother), Salem(arrived on 6/15/1883), Massachusetts, U.S.A.(Estados Unidos de America(U.S.A. in Spanish!)), via New York City(a superb, "transit," duplex cancel dated 6/14/1883!) by an Albert Gallatin Browne, Junior, and his wife, Mattie! They were staying at the Hotel De Francia & Inglaterra, Lima, Peru, at the time of writing! The mail was forwarded(possibly to save on postage, but also due to fears about censorship, or chaos surrounding the use of Chilean/Peruvian mail systems!) from Lima, Peru, via a W. R. Grace & Company, New York(a neat, purple cachet!) ship! As for Albert Gallatin Browne, Jr., he was originally from Salem. He had quite the fascinating, though, sadly, somewhat short life(1835-1891)! He was a fervent abolitionist who, in 1854, had tried to free escaped slave, Anthony Burns, from federal agents attempting to send him back to his owner! While his cohorts and he escaped being tried for the murder of a constable who died in the riot that had erupted over the attempt to send Anthony Burns back to his owner, his family thought he should be sent abroad for his safety! He went to Germany, and got a doctorate's degree from the University of Heidelberg! He would later become a journalist(hired by Horace Greeley, himself!) covering the Utah War(1857-1858) fought between some Mormon settlers in Utah(including Brigham Young) and the Federal Government. He was even given the responsibility of traveling over 4,000 miles, roundtrip(to Washington D.C. and back to Fort Bridger, Wyoming!), to help alert then-President Buchanan and Army generals of the need for reinforcements for the federal forces stationed fighting the Mormon "rebels!" During the Civil War, he served as the military secretary, confidante, and expediter/liaison of the Governor of Massachusetts, John Albion Andrew(also an ardent abolitionist!)! At the time of writing, Albert Gallatin Browne, Junior, was working for the New York Herald as a reporter, and was covering the War of the Pacific between Chile and Peru and Bolivia! Chile won that war, and expanded its territory by about one-third and acquired vast nitrate deposits which led to its growing affluence. There are some fascinating notes on the back of the envelope about how, at the time of writing, the occupying, Chilean Garrison(commanded by General/Rear Admiral Patricio Lynch) was forcing "50 (Peruvian) citizens to pay (U.S.) $2000 or 100,000," in local currency as a kind of extortion to weaken support for the war amongst Peruvian elites! As for the green, 3-Cent U.S. definitive, it's in very good-fine condition! An additional amount must have been paid to the forwarding agency, W. R. Grace & Company, for taking the mail to New York City. Noted imperfections aside, this cover remains a unique piece of postal history connected to the War of The Pacific, Chile, Lima, Peru, W.R. Grace & Company, New York, the New York Herald, Albert Gallatin Browne, Junior, his wife, and family back home in Salem, Massachusetts, U.S.A.!
