Rare Large Vintage Japanese Kamidana Shrine Cabinet / Konpira Folk Art Display

Acquired at a traditional antique market in Kyoto, this is a magnificent, highly rare, and large-scale vintage wooden shrine (Kamidana / Zushi) piece, embodying the deep spiritual heritage of Japan.

The Historical Significance of Kotohira-gu (Konpira-san):

Located on the slopes of Mount Zōzu in Kagawa Prefecture, Kotohira-gū (affectionately known as "Konpira-san") has been one of Japan's most revered and iconic shrines for centuries. Since the Edo period, making a pilgrimage to Konpira-san—known as "Konpira Mairi"—was a profound aspiration for people across Japan, celebrated as a journey one must make at least once in a lifetime. Dedicated to deities including Ōmononushi-no-Kami (the protector of maritime safety, agriculture, and prosperous business), items, talismans (ofuda), and shrines associated with Konpira-san held immense sacred and cultural importance in Japanese households and merchant ships.

Exquisite Craftsmanship & Rarity:

While the exact age is unknown, the weathered texture of the wood, the exquisite traditional architecture of the inner shrine structure, and the visible traces of masterful handcraftsmanship reflect a bygone era of Japanese folk art. Measuring a generous 50 cm in width and 59 cm in height, this is an exceptionally large and scarce piece—sizes of this magnitude are rarely found in the modern market.
