Full Morocco Leather Binding with Geometric Art Deco Gilt Design

A striking copy of Benét’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Civil War epic, illustrated by James Daugherty and finely bound in dark green morocco leather. Sweeping parallel gilt lines form bold chevrons across both covers, with related geometric tooling at the head and foot of the spine.

The combination of richly grained leather, precise gold ornament and vividly marbled endpapers gives this copy a distinctive Art Deco character. Gilt initials incorporating the date 1931 suggest an early ownership or presentation binding, close to the publication of this illustrated edition.

The Binding

Full dark green morocco leather, with a blue-green cast, decorated on both boards with multiple diagonal gilt rules meeting in angular chevron formations. The spine has five raised bands, gilt author and title lettering, a gilt publication date, and geometric ornament echoing the cover design.

Gilt-decorated turn-ins with small star ornaments frame the marbled endpapers. All page edges are gilt.

The binding is unsigned. Its design and dated initials are consistent with an early-1930s binding, although its exact date and maker have not been established.

Initials and Date

The inner binding bears the gilt initials “J.P.M.” and the arrangement “19 J.C.M. 31.” The identities behind these initials are unknown. They are described as ownership or possible presentation marks; no particular provenance is claimed.

The Poem and Illustrations

Winner of the 1929 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, John Brown’s Body traces the American Civil War through historical figures and fictional soldiers, civilians and families. Its scope extends well beyond John Brown himself, bringing together the public events and personal experiences of a divided nation.

James Daugherty’s forceful black-and-white drawings give this edition a dramatic visual presence. Their angular compositions make an especially effective companion to the geometric leather binding.

Condition

Very Good overall, with a firm binding and securely attached boards.

Rubbing, darkening and surface wear to the spine and joints, particularly at the raised bands and spine ends; some spine gilt is faint or worn. Light wear to corners and board edges, with scattered scuffs and handling marks. Slight bowing or spreading of the boards. The cover gilt remains bright and the geometric design displays well.

Marbled endpapers remain attractive. Gilt page edges show rubbing and dulling. Interior with age-toning and scattered foxing, more noticeable on and around some illustrated leaves. The illustrations remain clear.

No binder’s signature has been located. Not signed by the author.
