Agatized coral is a unique, prehistoric gemstone formed when ancient colonial corals are slowly replaced by chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of quartz. Because it has completely transitioned from an organic skeleton to quartz, it is technically a silicified fossil rather than protected marine coral.

Agatized coral is highly favored by lapidaries and designers because it is significantly harder (6.5–7 on the Mohs scale) than precious ocean coral, making it incredibly durable. 

🔍 How to Check Real vs. Fake
Because modern precious coral is soft, it reacts to acid (vinegar test). However, agatized coral is quartz (silica). This means standard "coral" tests (like the vinegar test) will not work on real agatized coral, because quartz does not fizz in acid. 
To spot imitation agatized coral (usually made from resin, plastic, glass, or dyed howlite), use these tests:

Acetone TestA cotton swab dipped in acetone (nail polish remover) will not extract any color.If the piece has been cheaply surface-dyed to mimic rich reds or blues, the color will bleed onto the cotton swab.
