An unusual novelty silver pepper pot in the form of a musical instrument called a Shamisen or Japanese banjo. It has a slide opening to house the pepper and some small holes on the side so that when shaken the pepper grounds are dispensed. The long neck of the instrument forms the handle. The item is stamped Sterling.
These novelty condiment items were produced by Sakai Silver Smiths Ltd who were Japanese manufacturers and exporters of silverware and jewellery in the early/mid 20th century.
Very good condition with no dents or splits to the silver, marked sterling silver.
