Extra Information:
This Electabuzz originates from the original Japanese Expansion Pack released on October 20, 1996, the first main expansion of the Pokemon Card Game.
The Japanese Expansion Pack contained 102 cards and predates the English Pokemon TCG Base Set by more than two years.
As an original 1996 Japanese release, this Electabuzz comes from the foundational period of the Pokemon Trading Card Game and retains the classic Japanese old-back design associated with the earliest Japanese Pokemon cards.
Unlike the later English Electabuzz 20/102, the prominent No.125 printed on this Japanese card represents Electabuzz's National Pokedex number rather than a conventional English-style collector number.
This version features Electabuzz at LV.35 with 70 HP.
Its first attack, Thundershock, deals 10 damage and uses a coin flip, leaving the Defending Pokemon Paralyzed on a successful result.
Thunderpunch deals a base 30 damage and also uses a coin flip. On heads, the attack gains an additional 10 damage for a total of 40. On tails, Electabuzz instead deals 10 damage to itself.
The artwork is by Ken Sugimori, original Pokemon character designer and one of the defining artists associated with the earliest Pokemon games and trading cards.
Sugimori's artwork appears throughout the foundational Japanese Pokemon Card Game releases and helped establish the original visual identity of the Generation I Pokemon.
This same core card was subsequently released internationally as Electabuzz 20/102 in the English Base Set.
It was later reprinted as Electabuzz 24/130 in Base Set 2, making this original Japanese Expansion Pack version the earliest release of the classic card design.
The original Japanese Expansion Pack was produced in both rarity-symbol and earlier No Rarity forms.
This listing is specifically for the regular rarity-symbol version and displays the black Rare star symbol. It should therefore be distinguished from the earlier collectible No Rarity printing of the same Electabuzz card.
Electabuzz is one of the original 151 Generation I Pokemon and was originally introduced as a standalone Electric Pokemon before Elekid and Electivire expanded its evolutionary family in later generations.
Its strong 70 HP, two attacking options, and status-effect potential also made Electabuzz one of the more substantial Basic Pokemon found in the original Base Set era.
The combination of its 1996 Japanese release date, Ken Sugimori artwork, Rare designation, original Expansion Pack origin, and Japanese old-back design makes this a strong example from the earliest years of Pokemon card collecting.
A strong vintage piece for Electabuzz collectors, Generation I collectors, original 151 collectors, Japanese Base Set collectors, Expansion Pack collectors, Rare card collectors, Ken Sugimori artwork collectors, Lightning Pokemon collectors, Japanese old-back collectors, 1996 Pokemon collectors, vintage Pokemon Card Game collectors, early Japanese Pokemon TCG collectors, and Kanto Pokemon set builders.
