A one-of-one circular fashion creation by designer Claire Cruz, created for ReMade: A Circular Design Challenge.
Courtside Couture reimagines donated clothing through a 2000s sportswear lens, combining football culture, streetwear, festival dressing and couture-inspired detailing.
Inspired by the way style icons including Rihanna and Aaliyah transformed sports jerseys into fashion statements, Claire approached the look through contrasting textures, pattern mixing and adaptable construction. Plaid, pinstripe, denim, football jerseys and sequins are deliberately brought together to create a look that feels playful, directional and distinctly Y2K.
Look 1 is a coordinated four-piece outfit comprising a reversible bralette, sequin hooded top, panelled longline shorts and matching plaid cap.
Each piece has been reconstructed from existing garments rather than made from new fabric. The original materials include denim jeans, a Brazil football jersey, a Beckham football jersey, plaid and pinstripe shirts, two ties and a zebra-print sequin top.
A statement sports-inspired bralette reconstructed from football jersey fabric. The design incorporates appliquéd elements taken from the original Beckham jersey, including “Beckham” and Real Madrid detailing, turning recognisable sportswear graphics into a new fashion piece.
The neck and back are adjustable, allowing the fit to adapt across different body sizes. The designer specifically developed the collection with flexibility and longevity in mind rather than designing for one fixed size.
Measurements:
A dramatic hooded top reconstructed from a black and silver zebra-print sequin garment. Its fitted silhouette contrasts with the oversized proportions of the shorts, while the sequins introduce the glamour element at the heart of the Courtside Couture concept.
The top features a front zip and adjustable construction, allowing it to be styled over the bralette as part of the complete look or worn independently. Claire specifically designed the sequin top to adjust across different sizes.
Measurements:
The hero piece of the look: oversized longline shorts constructed through deconstruction and panel-piecing, combining denim, plaid and pinstripe shirting while deliberately retaining original seams, buttons, pockets and garment details.
Rather than disguising where the materials came from, these original features become part of the finished design — preserving both their visual character and functionality.
A large “23” appliqué taken from the Beckham jersey appears on the leg, creating the strongest visual reference to the collection's sporting influences.
The elasticated waistband was intentionally introduced to accommodate a broader size range.
Measurements:
A coordinating cap constructed from the reclaimed plaid shirting used throughout the look. Pattern-cut specifically for the collection, it features curved bias binding at the back finished with contrasting yellow stitching.
This is not simply a collection of altered garments. Claire used traditional garment-construction techniques to dismantle and rebuild the donated clothing into an entirely new design.

These techniques were deliberately selected to create a professionally finished and durable garment rather than treating upcycling as a temporary or purely decorative intervention.
A central idea behind Courtside Couture is that circular design should extend the useful life of clothing without compromising creativity.
Claire worked with the existing history and construction of each donor garment, treating pockets, fastenings, seams and sporting graphics as potential design features rather than waste. Working across fabrics of different patterns and weights also required the individual garments to be considered as one cohesive design.
Adaptability was equally important. The shorts have an elasticated waistband, while the bralette and sequin top incorporate adjustable elements. Claire notes that the finished outfit has been worn by both a UK size 4 and UK size 10, demonstrating the intention behind its flexible construction.
Each component was also designed to work independently. Wear the complete Courtside Couture look as conceived by the designer, or separate the pieces and introduce them individually into an existing wardrobe — extending their potential use beyond a single outfit or occasion.
This is a unique, handmade circular design piece created from preloved donor garments. Variations and characteristics inherited from the original materials form part of the garment's history and the designer's intentional upcycled aesthetic.
