A total of 29,664 cars were built. It was a two-seat open roadster developed from the earlier T-Series layout, but its chassis incorporated components from the Y-Type saloon. The TD used independent front suspension with coil springs and wishbones, rack-and-pinion steering, a hypoid rear axle and semi-elliptic rear springs. These changes improved ride comfort and made left-hand-drive production practical for export markets.Power came from a 1,250 cc XPAG overhead-valve, four-cylinder engine with twin SU carburettors. Technical figures list 54.4 bhp at 5,200 rpm and 64.5 lb-ft of torque at 2,600 rpm, with a four-speed gearbox and synchromesh on the top three gears. Period road-test figures quote a 78.3 mph top speed and 0–60 mph in 18.2 seconds.The TD’s design used separate front wings, running boards, exposed headlamps, a vertical-slat radiator grille, cutaway doors and a folding windscreen. The rear carried an exposed fuel tank and spare-wheel carrier. Standard cars used 15-inch pressed-steel disc wheels, replacing the wire wheels associated with earlier T-Series models.A TD2 version appeared during 1951 with revised engine and clutch components. The TD Mark II competition model used higher compression, additional dampers, twin fuel pumps and approximately 57 bhp.
