This nifty, relatively uncommon Russian post card(quite clean on the front, but with glue and paper on the back; w/some minor wear and tear around its edges) was sent on May 27, 1899(5/15/99 according to the Julian calendar then used in Russia!), from the area around Lodz, Russian Poland, to someone with the Straits Settlements and Sumatra Ramie Syndicate, Zurich, Switzerland! The sender was a Gustav Laski, and he wrote his message in German. The Straits Settlements and Sumatra Ramie Syndicate was a Swiss commercial enterprise directed by Mr. C. Bluntschli of Siak. The syndicate sought patent rights and agricultural production for ramie (a fine, strong textile fiber from the nettle family) using specialized decortication machinery in Southeast Asia, including applications to regional governments like Pahang in the British Straits Settlements. One of the two cancels from the Russian T.P.O.(Lodz-Petrok R.P.O.), are pretty nice! The receiving cancel(5/29) from the Zurich P.O. is pretty fine, too, but a bit light/faded in places. As for the two, Russian definitives, the orange, 1-Kopek stamp is in very good-fine condition! The red, 3-Kopek issue has some obvious damage to its bottom, right corner. Noted imperfections aside, this remains a neat example of mail sent via a Russian traveling post office from Lodz, Russian Poland, to the Straits Settlements & Sumatra Ramie Syndicate in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1899!
