The Toilers of the Sea by Victor Hugo — Limited Editions Club, 1960.

A handsome fine-press edition of Victor Hugo's classic novel, printed for the members of the Limited Editions Club at the celebrated Officina Bodoni in Verona, Italy, under the direction of master printer Giovanni Mardersteig.

This is copy #970 of only 1,500 copies produced and is signed on the limitation page by both wood engraver Tranquillo Marangoni and printer Giovanni Mardersteig.

The book features the Isabel F. Hapgood translation, an introduction by Matthew Josephson, and 99 wood engravings by Tranquillo Marangoni. The volume is bound in quarter black cloth with distinctive green-and-gray patterned boards and retains both its original dust jacket and original slipcase.

The book itself remains in very good overall condition with a sound binding and clean interior. The black cloth spine shows scattered spotting/discoloration. The original dust jacket is heavily worn with significant chipping, tearing and losses, including a large loss at the head of the spine and damage to the lower rear panel. The original slipcase is also considerably worn.

A particularly attractive collectible for admirers of Victor Hugo, the Limited Editions Club, fine press printing, wood engraving, or Giovanni Mardersteig's Officina Bodoni.
