Antique c1820 Georgian Treen Burr Puzzle Snuff Box Faux Tortoiseshell Lined MOP

A beautiful early 19th-century Georgian treen snuff box, dating to around c1820, finely made in richly patinated burr wood with incised geometric decoration, rounded ends and a warm tortoiseshell-effect lined interior. This is a very tactile and characterful small box, full of period charm and exactly the sort of personal object associated with Georgian snuff-taking culture.

The exterior has a wonderful honey-brown colour, with darker figuring, deep handling patina and a glossy surface built up through age and use. The wood has a burr-like appearance, with attractive irregular grain and darker natural markings, giving the box much more visual interest than a plain treen example. The surface has not been over-restored, leaving a rich, authentic look.

The form is especially appealing. The rounded ends, shallow rectangular body and incised grid decoration give the box a slightly puzzle-like or architectural quality, almost suggesting a miniature travelling case or stylised book form. The lid is decorated with fine incised lines and a small pale oval inset, probably mother of pearl or bone, adding a discreet touch of refinement.

Inside, the box has a smooth dark tortoiseshell-effect lining, giving a striking contrast to the lighter outer treen surface. This warm, polished interior makes the box feel more luxurious and would have helped create a clean, close-fitting space for snuff. The contrast between the rustic hand-worn exterior and the refined interior is one of the most attractive features of the piece.

Snuff boxes of this kind were personal, tactile objects, carried, handled and opened repeatedly in daily social use. A good snuff box needed to be compact, close fitting and pleasant in the hand, and this example has exactly that quality. It feels like a box made to be used and enjoyed, not merely displayed.

The age and surface are excellent, with deep patina, darkened edges, old knocks, small marks and wear from long handling. There is visible age-related wear to the corners and ends, including small old losses and surface marks, but these add to the honest character of the piece rather than detract from its charm. The box opens to reveal a rich interior and retains a strong, displayable form.

A rare, collectable and highly decorative Georgian treen snuff box, combining burr-like figured wood, incised puzzle-style decoration, rounded ends, pale inset detail and a beautiful tortoiseshell-effect interior. It is a fine small object for collectors of treen, snuff boxes, Georgian social history and tactile early 19th-century personal accessories.
