This cover(envelope has some minor stains on either side, creases, and a sizable part of its top torn off when the mail was initially opened; back flap is missing) was sent on September 1, 1855/1856, from Wells, Maine, to a Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, in care of Judge Brown, Canton, Georgia! The addressee was the wife of the future, 42nd Governor of Georgia, Joseph E. Brown! At the time of writing, he was a state circuit court judge. He was governor of Georgia from 1857-1865, and was a supporter of secession, before, and during the Civil War. From 1880-1891, he was a Georgia state senator.  He's somewhat infamous for having slaves, and using convict labor to help build his fortune. As for the 3-Cent, "Washington,(Scott #11?)" it's in poor condition due to the damage to its bottom and right sides(most caused BEFORE the stamp was applied to the mail). Noted imperfections aside, this cover remains an uncommon, interesting piece of American postal history mailed in the 1850s, connected to Wells, Maine, Canton, Georgia, and the future, 42nd Governor of Georgia, Joseph E. Brown, and his wife.
