The actual painting measures approximately 52cm x 27cm and the mount approximately 68cm x 45cm. Old hulks visible and a three masted sailing ship. The Dockyard Semaphore tower visible between the masts of the ship. The view is from the Gosport shore.

The watercolours of F. Ford do not come onto the market very often. There is an F. Ford watercolour of the same size dated 1860 of the Entrance to Newhaven Harbour in the Government Art Collection.

This painting appears therefore to be one of the artist's later works.
