Original 1900 Stewart & Bauer illustrated advertising letterhead from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, measuring 8.5 x 11 inches. Addressed to the Samuel Pierce Organ Pipe Co. of Reading, Massachusetts, this attractive trade letter promotes the firm's S. S. Stewart Banjo, Mandolin & Guitar Journal and offers a discounted advertising rate to place an ad in the publication.
The ornate printed letterhead features advertising panels for S. S. Stewart Banjos & Banjeaurines and George Bauer Mandolins & Guitars, along with the firm's Philadelphia office at 1016 Chestnut Street and factory location on Sixth Street above Master. A small reproduction of the journal's cover is also printed at the upper right.
The handwritten letter explains the journal's large subscriber base of banjo, mandolin, and guitar players, notes its national dealer circulation, and offers to publish the recipient's advertisement for $5 as a trial before encouraging a full-year advertising commitment. A wonderful piece relating to the marketing and growth of the fretted instrument trade at the turn of the 20th century.
