Museum piece, very rare. Antique Lord Kelvin’s Patent Electric Balance

James White, Glasgow

Instrument No. 639

Circa 1893–1896

An exceptionally rare late Victorian scientific instrument designed by Sir William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, one of Britain’s greatest physicists and engineers.

Manufactured by James White of Glasgow, this is an original Lord Kelvin’s Patent Electric Balance, a precision laboratory instrument developed for the accurate measurement of electrical current by balancing the electromagnetic force generated between fixed and moving coils.

Unlike ordinary ammeters of the period, the Kelvin Electric Balance was used as a laboratory standard for the calibration of electrical instruments and scientific research.

The original maker’s plate reads:

Research indicates this is an early James White example dating from approximately 1893–1896, before the company became Kelvin & James White Ltd. around 1900. Similar examples are preserved in the Science Museum, the Smithsonian Institution and the Whipple Museum, Cambridge.

The instrument remains an impressive display piece and appears substantially complete, although it is offered as an antique scientific instrument and has not been electrically tested.

All images are taken by myself, I try to include all flaws and imperfection where possible, but may describe some as it may be imposable to show everything on all items due to natural where but there’s will be described. Please give allowance for colour variations as photographs as colours may differ slightly but I use a photographic light but ti try and show even colours but there’s a chance it may vary slightly but no issues from anyone since this account opened but I must make you aware.

** Shipping, Packaging and Postage Times **

We aim to pack and post within 3 days of payment (but can be as quick as 24hours but we say 3 days incase anything goes wrong or a purchase is made over the weekend).

All items are posted with a trackable postage method and may require a signature.

We try and recycle materials where possible to save the environment and keep costs down.

If the postage is significantly less we will offer a partial refund once you are happy.

If the postage price is more, we will soak the cost where possible to keep your experience good and be fair.

If the postage is significantly more ( eg I underestimated size and weight or the items sells for much more than I expected, thus increasing postage insurance or buyer is from a area in uk which is not covered by standard postage rates) we will contact you to see if we can come to a resolution.

If multiple items are purchased, Where possible we will try and combine postage to reduce cost for you. Please message me and I will see what I can do for you before purchasing.

Note: currently no international postage worldwide or to Europe untill I get Global shipping sorted through eBay. I am happy for you to ask and may consider this in the meantime.

** Feedback **

Feedback will be left after positive feedback has been received. This is do know you are happy with everything; if for any reason you are not, I ask you contact me first in order to help find resolution, I don’t want an unhappy buyer or negative feedback without trying to resolve first.

** Returns and refunds **

We Do NOT accept returns for items that are sold as SPARES REPAIRS OR PARTS. This is why they are being sold at reduced price.

We do not accept returns if you simply changed your mind, please ask all questions and information so you can make an informed decision before buying.
