Artist: 橋本雅邦 Hashimoto Gaho

A painter active from the late Edo period through the Meiji era who studied under the Kano family of Kobikichō.
He was born within the Kano family residence in Kobikichō, Edo, as the eldest son of Hashimoto Yōkuni (?–1848), a court painter to Matsudaira Shūnosuke and a disciple of Kano Yōshin. His childhood name was Sentaro, and he later went by the name Chōkyō.
In the third year of the Kōka era (1846), he began studying under Kano Yōshin at the same time as Kano Hōgai. After Yōshin’s death, he honed his painting skills under Masanobu, received a character from Masanobu’s name, and adopted the artist name Katsuen Tadanobu. In the first year of the Kaei era (1848), following the death of his father, Yōkuni, he succeeded him at a young age. During the late Edo period, he was active alongside Hōgai as one of Masanobu’s leading disciples, and in Ansei 4 (1857), he became the head of the art school.
After the Meiji Restoration, he lost his permanent position but began working at the Naval Academy of the Ministry of War in Meiji 4 (1871), serving in the drafting department. In Meiji 15 (1882), he was awarded the Silver Seal First Prize at the First National Painting Exhibition. He eventually began to focus on the movement to reform Japanese painting alongside Fenollosa and Okakura Tenshin; in Meiji 23 (1890), he was appointed professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and, in the same year, was appointed Imperial Artist.
In Meiji 31 (1898), following the Tokyo School of Fine Arts scandal, he participated in the founding of the Japan Art Institute and played an active role as its director. He nurtured the leading figures of modern Japanese painting, including Yokoyama Taikan (1868–1958) and Hishida Shunsō (1874–1911).
