Artist: 狩野伊川院栄信 Kano Isenin Eishin

A painter of the Edo Kano school who was active from the late 18th century through the first half of the 19th century.
He was born in Edo as the eldest son of Kano Yorinobu of the Kobikichō family. His childhood name was Eijirō. He was known as Ikawa and Ikawa-in, and adopted the artist name Genshōsai.
In Kansei 3 (1791), he was granted an audience with Tokugawa Ienari. In Kyōwa 2 (1802), at the age of 28—one year younger than his father, Yorinobu, who had been the earliest member of the Kano school to attain the rank of Hōgen—he was conferred the rank of Hōgen.
In Bunka 5 (1808), Yoshinobu passed away, and he succeeded him as the 8th-generation head of the family.
That same year, he created the folding screens presented to the court for the Bunka 8 (1811) fiscal year. In Bunka 13 (1816), he was appointed Hōin.
He was active in large-scale commissions by the shogunate, including the creation of wall paintings for Edo Castle and the Ueno Honbō Academy.
Focusing primarily on Chinese painting, he established a new style through his study of classical masterpieces, thereby revitalizing the painting style of the Edo Kano school.
He undertook large-scale copying projects and demonstrated exceptional talent in the creation of sketches from life; his work is seen in every respect as pioneering the efforts of Kano Yoshinobu, who later succeeded the Kobikichō branch of the family, and his artistic scope spanned a wide range of fields.
While Eishin’s eldest son, Yoshinobu, succeeded the Kobikichō branch, his second son, Asaoka Kōtei—author of *Koga Hikō*—was adopted into the Asaoka family; his fifth son, Kano Nakashin, was adopted into the Hamachō branch; and his sixth son, Kano Tatsunobu, was adopted into the Nakahashi branch. Each succeeded his respective branch, and the organizational foundation of the Kano school in the late Edo period was established by Eishin and his sons. It can be said that Eishin fundamentally transformed the structure of the Edo Kano school and was the first painter since Tanyū to establish his own new style within the school.
Numerous extant works by Eishin are preserved at institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the British Museum, and the Tokyo National Museum; however, since a vast number of works—including copies—are scattered throughout the world, it is not easy to grasp the full scope of his oeuvre.
His representative works include *Folding Screen with Landscapes of the Four Seasons* (private collection), *Landscapes with Flowers and Birds in Spring and Autumn* (Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art), *Landscapes of the Four Seasons* (Mitsui Memorial Museum), *Folding Screen with Landscapes and Pavilions* (Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art), *Illustrations from The Tale of the Heike* (Itabashi City Museum of Art), *Peony Painting (after Wang Yuan)* (private collection), *Hundred Islands* (Eisei Bunko), *Twelve Months of Monthly Customs* (a collaborative work with Yorinobu, held at the Edo-Tokyo Museum), *Celestial Maiden Ceiling Painting* (a collaborative work with Kano Kanenobu, at Shizuoka Sengen Shrine), and *Handbook of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy* (a collaborative work with Yoshinobu, held at the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art).
