Antique c1890 La Jurassienne Snuff Box Blacksmith Rosewood Wood White Metal

A striking late Victorian French “La Jurassienne” pocket box, dating to approximately 1890 and crafted from richly figured dark rosewood with engraved white-metal mounts. Its compact curved form is particularly tactile, while the deep reddish-brown grain gives the wood a warm, polished appearance.

The lid is centred by a finely engraved blacksmith standing at his anvil with hammer raised. This miniature occupational scene celebrates traditional craftsmanship and gives the box considerably more character than simpler floral examples.

Beneath the figure, “LA JURASSIENNE” is engraved within a shield-shaped cartouche framed by leafy branches. The rosewood body is finished with broad white-metal end mounts decorated with scrolling foliage, while a shaped metal strip across the lid provides a practical opening edge. Small pale inlaid dots complete the restrained decoration.

The fitted hinged lid opens to reveal the original plain rosewood interior, allowing the attractive timber to continue throughout. The contrast between the dark figured wood and cool silver-coloured metal gives the box a distinctive French provincial character.

The piece retains a rich aged surface with gentle rubbing, fine scratches and small marks from more than a century of handling. The engraved decoration remains clear, the inscription is fully legible and the lid continues to fit securely.

Dating from approximately 1890–1910, this is an appealing antique box with strong visual presence and social history. Its curved shape, warm grain and finely worked blacksmith scene make it especially satisfying to hold and examine.
