Product Description:

Hand-coloured copper engraved antique map of the Ottoman Turkish Empire, published in Amsterdam by Joan Blaeu circa 1635–1662, included in his monumental Latin atlas Atlas Maior. Titled Turcici Imperii Descriptio, this plate depicts the full territorial extent of 17th-century Ottoman rule, covering the Balkans, Asia Minor, the Levant, Egypt, North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and the Caucasus down to the Persian border. The map features an ornate Baroque decorative cartouche at the lower left bearing a Latin political maxim, with galleon sailing ships drawn across the Mediterranean and Red Sea. Compiled from European diplomatic reports, merchant travel logs and missionary records, it was the most comprehensive and widely circulated European regional map of the Ottoman Empire in the Dutch Golden Age.
