SUPER RARE VINTAGE 7X8 steel engraved portrait signed in pencil in lower right-hand margin below facsimile signature. Notation is written on the old backing of engraving "Given to Reverend J. W. Atkinson Father of W. J. Atkinson. Louisville, Kentucky about 1850." Light browning throughout, one six-inch scratch on engraving not affecting face, tears along edges. Pencil signature is light but readable. The first signed portrait of Audobon we have ever seen. Extremely rare and in spite of aforementioned defects still a showpiece.

(1785-1851) John J. Audubon. American artist and ornithologist known for the monumental "Birds of America." Photography was just being invented around the time Audubon signed this, so it's extremely rare any other signed image exists by Audubon.

Comes with a full Letter of Authenticity from Todd Mueller Authentics and a second COA from Christoph Stickel.
