SWITZERLAND 1926 BASEL TO LA CHAUX-DE-FONDS FIRST FLIGHT COVER WITH SPECIAL EVENT CANCELLATIONS
1926 (May 15), pioneer airmail cover from Basel to La Chaux-de-Fonds, flown on the inaugural first flight service. The face of the envelope in 62A is franked with a 15c red Airmail definitive (biplane over mountains) and a 5c grey-blue William Tell Bow definitive, both individually tied by large purple rectangular special event cancellations inscribed "1. FLUG-POST / 15.V.26 / STERNENPLATURES". The face features a manuscript route endorsement "Bâle - Chaux de Fond", detailed pencil flight timetable annotations ("Vertrek Basel 07.00 → La Chaux de F. 07.45 / Vertrek La Chaux 08.00 → Basel 08.45"), a bright blue perforated trilingual "Mit Flugpost" airmail label, and a printed address for Joseph Perrin at Villa Stella in Leysin. The reverse in 62B features a large, matching purple rectangular arrival cachet inscribed "1ère POSTE AÉRIENNE / LA CHAUX-DE-FONDS - BÂLE / 15.V.26 / 1926" incorporating a distinctive winged pocket watch emblem. The envelope is fully intact and remains in excellent condition.
This pioneer airmail cover documents the historic May 15, 1926 inaugural first flight connecting Basel with the watchmaking center of La Chaux-de-Fonds. The specialized flight postal service is fully mapped by the prominent purple commemorative cancellations stamped on both sides of the cover. The meticulous handwritten transit schedule on the face records the tight 45-minute flight window required to cross the Jura mountains, satisfying the 20c domestic single-weight letter and airmail supplement tariff. The highly symbolic winged pocket watch graphic on the destination backstamp directly celebrates the local horological industry of La Chaux-de-Fonds, making this a spectacular diagnostic artifact of classic interwar Swiss aerophilately.
Please examine lot scan carefully and please send any questions at least 48 hours before the auction closes. Please note that cover condition usually includes normal wear and tear to cover edges, opening tears and some creases and wrinkles. Only exceptional or extreme condition issues will be mentioned.
