Rare authentic Japanese Edo period small samurai tanto, complete with its original silk storage bag. This unusual concealed tanto was made in the form of a traditional tobacco pipe case, allowing it to resemble an everyday personal item while concealing a functional blade.
The saya and tsuka are beautifully decorated with gold applications depicting butterflies and floral motifs. The end of the saya is mounted with solid silver and features a cord attachment hole.
The tanto retains its original Edo-period tempered steel blade with the original habaki. The blade is very sharp and shows light oxidation near the upper portion, consistent with its age. The handle is secured with a removable mekugi (retaining pin), allowing the blade to be removed. The blade fits the tsuka and saya perfectly.
This is an original antique in untouched condition with no modern reproductions or replacement parts.
