Antique Rare c1870 Bone Ebony Miniature Dominoes Travel Pocket Set Mahogany Box

A rare and charming Victorian miniature dominoes travel set, dating to around c1870, housed in its original fitted mahogany box with brass edging, brass clasp and inset bone domino plaque to the lid. Compact, tactile and beautifully made, this is a delightful 19th-century pocket gaming set with strong parlour, travel and gentleman’s games appeal.

The set contains a complete double-six run of 28 miniature dominoes, each with bone face and dark ebony or ebony-backed underside. The contrast between the pale bone fronts and black backs gives the tiles a smart, traditional appearance, while the small scale makes the set especially appealing as a travel or pocket version rather than a standard full-size parlour set.

The dominoes are nicely made, with black pips and dividing lines set into warm aged bone. The tiles show natural mellowing, colour variation and handling wear from age, giving them far more character than modern machine-made examples. The dark backs add weight and visual contrast, and when laid out as a full set they have a very decorative period look.

The mahogany box is a particularly attractive feature. It is small enough to sit comfortably in the hand, with a rich reddish-brown colour, mellow polish and brass edging to the lid. The inset bone domino plaque gives the box immediate charm and identifies its purpose at a glance. The brass clasp, hinges and edging all add to the quality, giving it the feel of a well-made Victorian travel accessory rather than a simple toy box.

Sets of this type would have been used for parlour entertainment, travel, clubs, family games and quiet domestic amusement. Dominoes were a popular Victorian pastime because they were easy to carry, quick to play and suitable for both adults and children. A miniature boxed set like this would have been ideal for railway journeys, travel trunks, pocket use or a gentleman’s desk drawer.

The box and tiles present with age-related wear consistent with use, including light surface marks, mellowing to the bone, small signs of handling and wear to the mahogany and brass fittings. The set remains highly attractive, with the lid plaque, brass detail and full run of dominoes giving it excellent display and collector appeal.

A lovely Victorian miniature dominoes set, combining bone tiles, dark ebony-style backs, complete double-six set, hand-sized mahogany box, brass edging and period travel-gaming charm. A highly decorative and collectable piece of 19th-century leisure history, ideal for dominoes game players after-dinner, drinks, a special pocket set to keep on hand for whenever the occasion demands.
