Vintage Rare c1960s Murano White Lattimo Millefiori Murrine Cane Art Glass Baluster Vase

A striking vintage Murano art glass vase, dating to the mid-20th century, beautifully decorated with colourful millefiori murrine canes over an opaque white lattimo ground. Full of movement, colour and Venetian glassmaking character, this is a highly decorative piece with strong mid-century presence and real visual impact.

The vase has an elegant baluster form, with a flared neck, rounded shoulder and tapering lower body. The shape gives the decoration a wonderful sense of movement, as the coloured murrine appear to flow and stretch across the curved surface. Around the broader body the canes remain bold and jewel-like, while towards the neck they become more elongated, showing how the decoration has moved naturally during the blowing and shaping process.

The white lattimo ground is especially attractive. Lattimo, or milk glass, has long been associated with Venetian glassmaking and gives the vase a clean, luminous background against which the colours stand out vividly. The scattered murrine include strong blues, reds, greens, yellows, turquoise and amber tones, creating a lively painterly surface rather than a rigid pattern. This makes the vase feel bright, modern and spontaneous, while still rooted in traditional Murano technique.

The millefiori decoration is made from cut sections of patterned glass cane, fused into the body of the vase. Millefiori literally means “a thousand flowers”, and here the canes give the piece its distinctive floral, mosaic-like character. Some retain clear rosette and bullseye forms, while others are stretched and softened into more abstract colour trails, adding to the handmade quality.

This is not a plain decorative vase with surface painting; the colour is integral to the glass itself. The murrine are embedded within the body, giving depth, texture and optical richness. The polished surface, substantial form and vivid colour palette all support a Murano attribution, most likely made for the export and decorative art glass market during the mid-century period.

The base is flat-ground and polished, with expected age-related wear to the foot rim from standing. The vase is unsigned, as many vintage Murano pieces originally carried only paper labels, often now lost over time. The overall quality, technique, colour and finish are consistent with Venetian Murano production.

A highly decorative and collectable Murano-style art glass vase, combining white lattimo glass, vivid millefiori murrine cane decoration and a strong sculptural baluster form. It works beautifully as a standalone display piece, with enough colour and presence to lift a modern interior while still carrying the charm and craftsmanship of mid-century Venetian glass.

Size: c.10.5cm diameter across the top of the rim, 7.5cm base, H 16cm
