Sorry we are not train experts, this information comes from a train guy we had look at the set.  The primary difference between HO and On30 is scale: HO is 1:87 scale (standard gauge), while On30 is 1:48 scale (O scale) narrow gauge that runs on the same 16.5mm track width as HO. On30 allows larger, more detailed trains to operate on small layouts, while HO offers smaller, more space-efficient modeling.
